LUTE

I specialize in two specific types of lutes, as the lute family is very large and each one usually represents a style, region and era: the Renaissance lute and the archlute, used for early 18th century basso continuo playing. A very good book for the Renaissance lutenist is Diana Poulton’s A Tutor for the Renaissance Lute. A must have for the Renaissance lutenist is The Collected Lute Music of John Dowland edited by Diana Poulton.

This wealth of lute music has something for the lutenist of any level. For the lutenist interested in playing the archlute, the absolute best book to own is Nigel North’s Continuo Playing on the Lute, Archlute and Theorbo. This text may be the only of its kind that assembles years of treatises and musical examples for the lute. The book is extremely comprehensive and a scholarly gem. For purchasing a lute as well as free lute music and many other lute related topics, check out Wayne’s Lute Page.
