DRUMS

Much like guitar students, I’ve had drum students of varying styles. Likewise, there are certain texts that all drum students should own. The two texts that come to mind are G.L. Stone’s Stick Control and Ted Reed’s Syncopation, both staples in the jazz drummer’s library. While the former will serve the drum student for countless years, the latter continues to yield new and innovative ways to interpret it.

The rock drummer, especially the beginner, should investigate Alfred’s Drum Set Method as well as Alfred’s Snare Drum Method; however, my humble beginnings as a rock drummer were almost entirely by ear. I spent countless hours learning Led Zeppelin, Police, Yes and early Genesis beats by ear before I learned how to read music. Although this is not the order in which everybody should learn, both types of learning are highly suggested.

Below are suggested instructional books for Mandolin, Guitar, Lute and Drums.
